The Democratic nominees for county commissioner in two of the three newly redrawn voting districts in San Juan County, Utah, will be Native Americans. At the county’s Democratic convention on March 24th, Willie Grayeyes garnered enough votes to advance to the November 6th general election in District 2. Grayeyes is board chair for Utah Diné Bikéyah, a nonprofit that advocated for the creation of Bears Ears National Monument. In District 3, former Commissioner Kenneth Maryboy took the most votes. He faces a primary challenge from incumbent Commissioner Rebecca Benally, who gathered signatures to petition onto the ballot. The chair of the San Juan Democrats, James Adakai, said in an email that Benally did not attend the convention. No Democrats are running in District 1. Republicans will have their county convention on April 5th.
