Meet New Cortez City Manager John Dougherty

John Dougherty is wrapping up his first week as Cortez city manager shortly after the council unanimously agreed to hire him in late June.

Dougherty’s background includes managing several other towns, most recently in Kingman, Arizona. KSJD reviewed his application through the Colorado Open Records Act and a report from The Journal — Dougherty was fired by two previous towns and did not receive a contract renewal in another. He says the actions were driven by councils moving in a new direction and by communication issues.

As for Cortez, Dougherty aims to maintain regular communication with the council to prevent conflict in the future. He also has visions for Cortez to draw new businesses with the region’s parks, natural resources and relatively low cost of living compared to competing cities in states like California.

Dougherty joined KSJD’s Daniel Rayzel to address his background and ideas for the future of Cortez.
