Montezuma County Sheriff Seeks Public's Help Investigating Arson Cases

Arson is suspected in a series of brush fires that occurred from the end of April through the first week of May. The Montezuma County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public’s help in reporting any suspicious vehicles or activity along county and Forest Service roads. According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the first of the fires took place April 27th on Road 33, south of Road R. Three fires broke out on April 29. One was also on Road 33, one was on Road 32 north of Highway 184, and the third was on Road S near Road 36. The fifth fire started on May 5th on Highway 184 east of Road S. None resulted in injury or property damage. Anyone who notices suspicious activity should call 911 or the Cortez dispatch center at 565-8441. The countywide fire ban is still in effect and there are fire restrictions on BLM and Forest Service lands in the area as well.
