One Year After Taking Sanctuary, Rosa Sabido Says She Still Believes in Miracles

Gail Binkly

Rosa Sabido marked a year living in sanctuary at a Mancos church with an observance called a verbena on Saturday. Sabido, formerly a secretary for a Catholic church in Cortez, has lived in the United States for more than 30 years. Her mother and stepfather are U.S. citizens. She has been seeking permanent residency in the United States and was granted a stay of removal by federal authorities every year until 2017, when her request for another stay was denied. She has since been in sanctuary at the Mancos United Methodist Church. On Saturday she thanked her friends and supporters and said she continues to believe in miracles.

Gail Binkly is a career journalist who has worked for the Colorado Springs Gazette and Cortez Journal, and was the editor of the Four Corners Free Press, based in Cortez.
