Outdoor Companies Rally Together to Support Monument Designation

The outdoor industry is urging President Obama to go ahead and designate the artifact-rich Bears Ears area in San Juan County, Utah, as a national monument.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that on Thursday, representatives of the industry held a press conference in Salt Lake City to support an inter-tribal coalition's call for the 1.9-million-acre protected area. Patagonia’s Hans Cole said Bears Ears is “America’s most significant unprotected cultural landscape.” Among other outdoor businesses supporting the monument are Osprey Packs, The North Face, Black Diamond Equipment, and more. However, Utah’s elected leaders are nearly unanimous in opposing a monument declaration, saying it would bring more people and impacts to the area without providing additional protection.
