You may not have heard of the architect Mary Colter. But if you’ve traveled around the American West, you might have seen or been inside some of her buildings. Colter worked with a company called Fred Harvey that constructed hotels and other buildings along railways in the west between the turn of the 20th century and the 1930s. A few of her notable works include Hermit’s Rest and the Desert View Watchtower in Grand Canyon National Park, and La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona.
A theatre production in Bluff on Saturday, called "A Woman By Design" will portray the life of Mary Colter. Phoenix-based actor Elizabeth Ware will star in the one-woman performance. Ware joined KSJD's Austin Cope live on Morning Edition on Friday morning.
