Mesa Verde National Park is asking for help combating graffiti, vandalism, and littering. In a recent Facebook posting, park officials say over the summer they have seen more and more evidence of such behavior. Spokesperson Christy Brown tells KSJD in a recent incident, a vandal dug up prehistoric charcoal from an archaeological site and used it to rub names onto sandstone. The charcoal was completely used up.

A 36-year-old Montezuma County man was being held Friday on a charge of first-degree homicide in the death of his mother. Sheriff Steve Nowlin says Jeremiah Damron is believed to have shot his mother, 62-year-old Kristie Damron, sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday. Nowlin says his office received a report about 10 a.m. Thursday about a possible shooting at the suspect's home on County Road 21.75, and found Kristie Damron dead in the backyard.

The Montezuma County Detention Center had to be shut down and decontaminated Friday after three deputies and a detention nurse developed respiratory problems and light-headedness. They had come into contact with an Albuquerque man who was arrested in Cortez in a stolen vehicle after a high-speed pursuit. Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin tells KSJD Michael B. McMordie, age 31, was spotted going over 100 mph in a law enforcement vehicle on Highway 145 around 8 Friday morning.
