Morning Edition host Lacy McKay speaks with author Kate Niles about her new mystery novel, The Last Hanging of Ángel Martinez, which dives into the depths of human complexity, morality, and the intricacies of the Southwest landscape. Drawing on her own experiences as a probation officer and therapist, Kate has crafted a story that combines the grit of crime investigation with the subtleties of human emotion and resilience. Her work also explores how women navigate hidden details, often overlooked by others, and brings to life a strong female protagonist. They talk about the unique blend of mystery and introspection in her writing, and how the Southwest itself becomes a key character in her story.

She will be appearing locally at:
November 11th Mancos Public Library – 6:30 pm

November 12th Maria’s Bookshop, Durango, CO – 6:00 pm

November 15th at 6 pm at Dolores Public Library Dolores CO

LP recently moved to Mancos from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
