"Spokes and Shovels" at Southwest Open School

Southwest Open School

Students at Southwest Open School just completed a class called "Spokes and Shovels" that incorporates outdoor education through mountain biking and trail maintenance, as well as civic engagement through public outreach. KSJD's Tom Yoder spoke with Ed Writner, the SWOS teacher who is leading the class, and Adam Yazzie, one of his students, about the ideas behind this unconventional class, and how students who are taking it are learning about the importance of civics.
