Endangered Razorback Sucker May Be Recovering

Colorado River Razorback Sucker

According to a press release from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, biologists have counted more yearling razorback suckers this fall in the San Juan River than they have seen in one season in over 20 years.

The razorback sucker was classified as an endangered species in 1991 under the Endangered Species Act. It is found in the Colorado River and its tributaries, including the San Juan River, and the higher numbers of yearlings counted in the San Juan River this fall may signify that the fish are making a comeback, and a measure of success for the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program, which has been focused on improving habitat for the endangered fish.
