The Doe Canyon Fire has grown to 675 acres, according to an update Thursday evening from the San Juan National Forest.

The fire is 8% contained and continues to burn at a low intensity with no threat to nearby structures. Firefighting priorities include keeping the fire from reaching a nearby timber sale area and the Dolores River. Incident Commander Brad Pietruszka issued a statement that said increased moisture is keeping the fire tame.

“We can mostly monitor this fire and allow fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem,” Pietruszka said.

The fire, about 10 miles southeast of Dove Creek, was caused by lightning on June 18. It was first spotted two days later.

A closure is in effect until July 8 unless rescinded prior. The closure is bounded by Forest Service Road 504 and its intersections with FSR 506, and to the north by the Lake Canyon watershed and to the south by FSR 506A. The prohibited area includes FSRs 506A, 506B, 506C, 506E, 506G, 506M, 506K1 and 215. A map is available below.
