Lost Midas is the work of producer Jason Trikakis, a Boston-born, L.A.-based drummer who grew up on J. Dilla, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and 1980s New Wave. On his new album, Off the Course, Lost Midas cherrypicks from funk, chillwave and dream-pop to make off-kilter (but on-point) soul music.

"Head Games" is the lead single from the album, and it's reminiscent of the best stuff by Neon Indian or Bibio. The vocals, delivered by the singer Audris, float above intricate, irresistible drum patterns. The track is emotional, idiosyncratic, aurally magnetic and all-consuming — a brilliant and melodic gumbo that reveals different elemental textures with each listen.
