KSJD Newscast - September 8th, 2015

  • Two people die in vehicle accidents in southwest Colorado over Labor Day weekend.
  • Number of victims revised in Sunday's plane crash near Telluride.
  • Attorney to speak in Cortez on proposed National Conservation Area on the Lower Dolores River.

Two people have died in separate vehicle accidents in Southwest Colorado over the Labor Day weekend. According to Captain Adrian Driscoll of the Colorado State Patrol, the driver of a semi truck died in a rollover on Saturday on Highway 160 between Pagosa Springs and Durango. The cause is unknown. And on Sunday afternoon, a pickup drifted over the center lane on Highway 550 north of Durango and struck a motorcycle, killing the bike’s driver and seriously injuring his wife. The motorcyclists were from Farmington, New Mexico.

And recovery efforts and an investigation continue in regard to a fatal plane crash Sunday afternoon in the mountains near Telluride. All on board were killed when the twin-engine Cessna 310 went down near Grizzly Peak in San Juan County. The National Transportation Safety Board has reportedly revised the number of victims from five to four but their identities have not been released. The plane was en route from Barstow, California to Amarillo, Texas, when it disappeared from radar. It is unknown why it was so far north.

And an attorney specializing in water law is coming to Cortez on September 30th to discuss the ramifications of a proposed National Conservation Area on the Lower Dolores River. The idea of an NCA was proposed in 2010 by the grassroots Lower Dolores Working Group as an alternative to Wild and Scenic River suitability on the Dolores below McPhee Dam. A subcommittee of the working group released a draft version of possible legislation in March of this year. The Southwestern Water Conservation District, Dolores Water Conservancy District, Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company and four county commissions then decided to hire attorney David Robbins to evaluate the draft legislation regarding its protections for water rights and other issues. The public is invited to hear his comments beginning at six p.m. September 30th at the conference center at the Holiday Inn Express.
