Controlling Mosquitoes in Montezuma County

Wikimedia Commons
Mosquito larvae live near the surface of standing water, breathing through siphons. One method of mosquito control involves applying a fast-degrading oil to the water's surface to suffocate the larvae.

How many places can water collect in your backyard? Puddles and ponds, old tires, flower pots, or your new rain barrel. Standing water is where mosquitoes lay their eggs, which turn into larvae and then into adults. Those adult mosquitoes can carry infectious diseases-- or at least really annoy you.

The Montezuma Mosquito Control District contracts with a company to keep mosquito populations down. KSJD's Gail Binkly and Austin Cope sat down with Jason Carruth, the district manager of Colorado Mosquito Control, to talk to him about how they control mosquitoes, what diseases are a threat in our area, and what people can do to control mosquitoes on their own property.

You can contact the Montezuma Mosquito Control district at 970-565-9134 for further advice, or to report mosquitoes on your own property.

Gail Binkly is a career journalist who has worked for the Colorado Springs Gazette and Cortez Journal, and was the editor of the Four Corners Free Press, based in Cortez.
