A local resident urged the City of Cortez on Tuesday to do better about keeping handicapped parking spaces open following snowstorms.

Judi Lichliter told the city council that after January’s big storm, the handicapped space at the Cortez Public Library was deep in snow although other parking spaces were dry. She also mentioned ice on First Street near the Post Office and a bank where a snow pile obstructed handicapped parking. She said City Manager Shane Hale had witnessed the situation at the library and promised her it wouldn’t happen again, but she urged the city to be diligent. Hale later told the council the library problem was a one-time mistake by a new employee and would not recur.
