At the end of last year, President Obama declared the Bears Ears National Monument amidst vocal opposition among some locals. But in the year 2000, then-president Bill Clinton took similar action: he declared Canyons of the Ancients National Monument west of Cortez.  The monument now covers over 175,000 acres and the highest concentration of archeological sites in the United States. And though that designation may not have been quite as controversial as the Bears Ears, the Bureau of Land Management still had to balance a complex set of interests to manage the area’s resources. LouAnn Jacobson was the first manager of the monument, holding the post between 2000 and 2010. She sat down with KSJD’s Austin Cope to talk more about her experience.
