Ming Adams, who owns Canyons of the Ancients Guest Ranch in McElmo Canyon (above), was one of about 75 McElmo residents who encouraged the Dolores Water Conservancy District to specifically address McElmo in its Drought Contingency Plan Monday evening.

On Monday, a public meeting held by the Dolores Water Conservancy District (DWCD) was met with a standing-room-only crowd—not a regular occurrence at water management meetings.  The day after the meeting, KSJD's Austin Cope talked with Mike Preston, DWCD General Manager, to learn more about the District's plans for McElmo.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
