Phil's World Bike Trail Expansion Temporarily On Hold After Neighbors' Appeal

A planned expansion of the Phil’s World bicycle trail system east of Cortez is on hold until a decision is made about whether the expansion should be stayed pending an appeal. On Monday, BLM Tres Rios Field Office Manager Connie Clementson told the Montezuma County commissioners the Interior Board of Lands Appeal will decide by the end of April whether to grant the stay, which has been requested by a couple whose property adjoins the expansion area. The couple has also appealed the BLM’s decision to approve the expansion. Commissioner Larry Don Suckla said he had read the appeal, which is largely centered on wildlife concerns. He said their argument was, “We have to protect the deer so we can shoot them later,” and called that “ridiculous.”
