Federal Budget Shows Slight Increases For Tribal Agencies

Bureau of Indian Affairs

Native American tribes will see more money for many services and projects from the spending bill that became law last week. The bill includes a 10 percent increase for the Indian Health Service and a 7 percent increase for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Bureau of Indian Education. A press release from New Mexico Senator Tom Udall says the measure “allows the federal government to better meet its trust and treaty obligations to Indian Country.” The spending package also includes $55.5 million in funding for Indian Land and Water Claims Settlements, an increase of $10 million over last year. That amount includes $22 million for the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project and $4 million for the Navajo Water Resources Development Trust Fund.
