Officials in San Juan County, New Mexico, are mulling the idea of suing pharmaceutical companies over the cost of the opioid crisis. The Farmington Daily Times reports the county commission recently gave a unanimous go-ahead to hiring attorneys to look into how much money the painkillers have cost the county so far. There were a reported 107 deaths from drug overdoses in San Juan County in 2016, though that data doesn’t specify which drugs were responsible. However, the Daily Times says about half of the overdose deaths between 2010 and 2014 were caused by opioids. The Navajo Nation has already filed a lawsuit against several manufacturers and distributors of the narcotic painkillers.
