Judge Orders Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance to Pay San Juan County Legal Fees

Ken Lund

San Juan County, Utah may have some reprieve from its rising legal costs.

The San Juan Record reportsa federal judge has ordered the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, known also as SUWA, to pay the county’s legal fees after a lawsuit from last year. In the suit, the advocacy group claimed the commissioners violated state open meeting law after visits from Interior Department officials.

But the judge dismissed the suit. He said SUWA instead intended to intimidate the commissioners and to dissuade them from meeting with the Federal officials.  He ordered SUWA to reimburse the county for its attorney fees. Commissioner Bruce Adams praised the ruling, and called SUWA’s business tactics “manipulative.”
