Former Renew Executive Director Charged With Theft, Witness Tampering

Charges have been filed against a former executive director of Renew following an investigation by the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office.

The district attorney charged Cheryl Beene with one count of misdemeanor theft, one count of felony theft and one felony count of tampering with a witness.

Renew, which provides support for victims of domestic violence and assault, placed Beene on leave during the investigation. The Journal reports she is no longer employed by Renew.

Among the allegations are reports from employees witnessing Beene stealing donations from Second Chance Thrift Store, a Dolores storefront that supports Renew’s Wings Safehouse. Additionally, Beene allegedly stole an Xbox intended for the Safehouse and told an employee, “If you are ever asked, I paid for a gaming system,” according to the report.

Last month, a letter from Renew staff and community members asked for the resignation of five of its board members, citing, among other reasons, delay and mishandling of allegations against Beene.
