More than a hundred people braved the bitter cold in Cortez on
Saturday morning to take part in a rally and what was called the
People’s March. They stood shivering in the wind in Veterans Park to
listen to several politically progressive speakers address the
ramifications of Donald Trump’s election to a second term as president. Trump carried Montezuma County by a 59-to-38 percent margin. One of the speakers, local resident Rebecca Busic, said the progressive movement has come to be looked upon as something focused on women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. She said straight, heterosexual men also need support because they are struggling in this country. She said, “They are falling behind in education and they suffer more greatly from the diseases of despair, which include alcoholism, drug addiction and suicide.” Busic told the audience, “Welcome the men. We need them as badly as they need us. None of us is getting anywhere without the other.” Rally-goers then marched along Montezuma Avenue and Main Street. The events took place without incident. A half-dozen pro-life counter-protesters attended the rally, but discussions between them and progressives were civil. People’s Marches also took place in Washington, D.C., and hundreds of other cities around the nation.
