Almost two years after San Juan County Utah commission and school board voting districts were ruled unconstitutional, county residents gave input on proposals for new district boundaries.
On Thursday at public hearings in Monticello and Bluff, U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby and Special Master Bernard Grofman listened to feedback from citizens about accuracy and fairness of the proposed districts. After rejecting San Juan County’s redistricting attempt last year, the judge appointed Grofman to redraw the district lines.
Grofman will now use the public comments to finalize the district boundaries and ensure that they abide by the equal protection clause, case law, and good governance standards. Judge Shelby says he hopes to issue final maps of the boundaries by the middle of next month.
