Bluff Solstice Burn Prepares to Take Flight with Sculpture of Two Ravens

Courtesy of Joe Pachak
The heads of each raven were placed Tuesday. Sculptor Joe Pachak hopes to finish late Wednesday.

Two embracing ravens will stand tall along Highway 191 in Bluff for the next few days — until the sculpture gets burned during the town’s annual winter solstice celebration.

Joe Pachak, who creates each year’s sculpture, says the anthropomorphic pose was inspired by two ravens he spotted roughly 20 years ago while rafting along the San Juan River.

Saturday’s burn celebration begins at 7 p.m.across from Recapture Lodge. Parking will be concentrated at and around the Bluff Community Center.

Pachak joined KSJD’s Daniel Rayzel to share the inspiration behind this year’s creation and what he looks forward to at this year’s burn.
