The Burro Fire reached 95 percent containment after recent rainfall and increased humidity benefited firefighting efforts.

Tom Ferrell at the information desk for Dolores Public Lands said most site work is going toward rehabilitation. At this time, the fire is considered inactive and is not expected to grow beyond 4,593 acres.

Ferrell added that there’s no exact estimate for when 100 percent containment will be reached but is expected to occur in one or two weeks. As with most wildfires, smoldering will continue for an unpredictable period.

The Burro fire started approximately 14 miles south of Rico on June 8. The cause is still under investigation.

The National Weather Service maintains a flash flood watch for areas near the Burro and 416 fire burn scars.
