Memorial day campers and celebratory high school graduates will have to be especially careful with fire this year, as dry conditions have sparked burn restrictions across the region.
The Farmington Daily Times reports San Juan County, New Mexico commissioners decided to enact fire restrictions on Tuesday. Stage 1 restrictions will also go into effect on the federal lands of southeastern Utah on Friday. Now all federal, tribal, state, and county jurisdictions in the four states of the KSJD listening area have some form of fire regulations.
The majority of the restrictions are Stage 1. That means using fireworks or explosives and building fires outside of established rings is not allowed. Smoking or using devices that create sparks like chainsaws or welders is only allowed in spaces clear of vegetation or with spark arrestors. Some exceptions or extra rules exist, so listeners should consult their local agencies for details.
High winds and low humidity are expected again over this weekend, before a slight chance for thunderstorms returns to the high elevations early next week.
