Fires Start Burning North of McPhee Reservoir

San Juan National Forest

Two fires burning north of McPhee Reservoir grew from recent lightning strikes, according to a release from San Juan National Forest personnel.

The Plateau and West Guard Fires — known collectively as the Plateau Fire Complex —  were discovered over the weekend after a citizen call and a helicopter patrol, respectively.

Neither fire is contained but both remain around five acres in size with firefighters on the scene to determine burnout possibilities. The Plateau Fire’s location in steep, rugged terrain prevents direct firefighting and instead puts focus on steering it away from damaging private property.

As scouting takes place, roadside signs will be posted to alert the public of any closures. At this time, Forest Road 523 is shut down in addition to closures related to the ongoing Burro Fire.

San Juan National Forest lifted its fire restrictions last week after several days of afternoon showers and increased humidity. The Journal reports that Montezuma County is not expected to do the same for at least one more week.
