In less than three months, Cortez will vote to fill five open seats on the Cortez City Council.
Three of the seats are for four-year terms, and two will have two-year terms. Thinking of filling one of the seats yourself? Cortez City Clerk Linda Smith says anyone with an interest in government should grab a packet from her and get started.
“Anyone that’s interested to serve the government and their community,” Smith said. “They’ve always had an interest to know what goes on in the city. It’s a great way to learn a lot of things.”

Candidate hopefuls have until Jan. 27 to collect at least 25 signatures from residents with a Cortez address (P.O. boxes do not count). Signatures could come from family, friends or strangers — as long as they’re registered voters and sign no more than five petitions total.
As of Monday, Smith says 10 petitions are circulating.
