Fort Lewis College Won't Punish Students Who Graffitied Comb Ridge Archaeological Site

Wikimedia Commons

A Fort Lewis College student has taken responsibility for defacing a cultural site on Comb Ridge in southeast Utah.

The Durango Herald reports the student faces a $250 fine from the Bureau of Land Management but no punishment from the college. Some 10 students in the Outdoor Pursuits program reportedly wrote in black charcoal on the rock wall of a cave containing an archaeological site while on an overnight trip in October. The Herald reports the college wants them to help clean up their graffiti and others’, but the BLM says there is a process to be followed before that can be done.
