The U.S. Senate race in New Mexico may see a familiar name join this year’s election: former state Gov. Gary Johnson.
Aubrey Dunn dropped out as the race’s Libertarian candidate to focus on his work as state land commissioner, he said in a statement. He also talked to Johnson, an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and 2016 Libertarian presidential candidate, about taking his place.
Associated Press reported that a Johnson representative said he was “seriously considering” to run if Dunn dropped out.
Johnson, a strong opponent of two-party control in government, would put Democrat Martin Heinrich at risk of losing reelection. As it stands, AP also reports Democrats seeing a confident victory over Republican Mick Rich, an Albuquerque contractor running for office for the first time. A bid from Johnson could cause both parties to reassess strategy for November’s election.
