Grand Canyon's North Rim Will Open Thanks to 40,000-Gallon Daily Water Delivery

National Park Service

The North Rim at Grand Canyon National Park is set to open on May 15th despite multiple breaks in the pipeline carrying water to the remote area.

In a release, park officials said a private contractor will be hauling 40,000 gallons of water a day to the North Rim until the pipeline is repaired. Heavy snows and resulting rockslides reportedly caused the damage to the system. The repair effort, which may take up to 45 days, entails using a helicopter to transport replacement pipe to steep, rugged sites. Park management still anticipates that  most lodging, camping, and other services at the North Rim will be restored by May 26th, though some water-conservation measures may be required.
