Mayor Sheek Reflects on Trust, Love for Local Government

After eight years in office, Karen Sheek’s time as the mayor of Cortez is coming to an end.

“I’m kind of looking forward to having a little bit of more flexibility,” said Sheek, who is finishing her second term. “But at the same time, I have loved doing this. I’ve enjoyed working with the public.”

It may not be the last time she’ll work for the city, either. Sheek said she’s open to other opportunities that would keep her involved with local government.

Ahead of the city council election on April 7, Mayor Sheek joined KSJD’s Daniel Rayzel for an exit interview. Sheek spoke about maintaining public trust in the wake of an embezzlement investigation, knowing when to make a concession and what she expects for her next step.
