M.B. McAfee Encourages Montezuma Commissioners to Adopt Ethics Policy

Austin Cope

A local citizen and candidate for the Montezuma County commission urged the present commissioners on Monday to develop an ethics policy. M.B. McAfee of Lewis, who is seeking the seat now held by James Lambert, said the issue occurred to her in light of a recall effort being launched against La Plata County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt over alleged conflicts of interest. When McAfee asked the board whether the county has an ethics policy, Administrator Melissa Brunner said she did not believe there is one. Commissioner Larry Don Suckla said that his ethics came from his mom, his dad and his grandparents. Suckla said, “I really don’t need it written down.” However, McAfee said a written policy would be a good idea. The board did not say whether they believed the issue was worth pursuing.
