Moccasin Mesa Fire Management to Transition at 80 Percent Containment

Mesa Verde National Park

The Moccasin Mesa Fire burning at Mesa Verde National Park’s southeast boundary reached 80 percent containment Thursday. The fire has not expanded beyond 185 acres since Sunday.

The final section of the containment line is located in the tributary of School Section Canyon, an area with steep terrain difficult for firefighting efforts.

On Friday, the Durango Type 3 Incident Command Team plans to transition operations back to Mesa Verde National Park. Minimal fire activity is expected in the coming days despite the continued hot and dry weather.

Aside from the closure of B Cut parking lot near Park Point for fire personnel, the park remains unaffected and open to the public.
