Navajo Nation May Have Buyers For The Navajo Generating Station

The Navajo Nation has announced that it has identified some potential buyers for the Navajo Generating Station in Page, Arizona. The current owners of the coal-fired power plant, which include the Salt River Project in Arizona, have said it is no longer economically viable. But the Navajo Nation depends on the plant and the associated Kayenta coal mine for more than a quarter of its operating budget. Closing them would also mean the loss of more than 3,000 direct and indirect Navajo jobs. The nation is seeking a buyer to keep the plant open beyond its scheduled decommissioning in 2019. The tribe will conduct an extensive review of these potential purchasers to determine if a sale is feasible.
