‘The Rider’ Embraces Authenticity to Share the West’s Complexities

The Rider

When creating "The Rider," director Chloé Zhao wanted to share the story of an injured rodeo star from South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation in a convincing, accurate presentation.

The result: a film about life on the reservation comprised entirely of actors from its setting.

Desiree Henderson, director of the Sunflower Theatre, says this adds authenticity when telling the varied stories of the American West.

KSJD’s Daniel Rayzel spoke to Henderson about the film’s connection to a Four Corners audience ahead of Thursday’s screening at the Sunflower Theatre.
