  • A group of senators is encouraging consideration of a farm bill that provides support for projects that address drought, the Colorado Master Irrigator Program kicks off on January 18th, cattle markets are starting 2024 in a much better position than they were a year ago, and meteorologists predict that we’ve likely reached the peak of the El Nino weather pattern this winter.
  • The recent winter storms that have blanketed the Four Corners have meant some outdoor trails have not been accessible for recreation. And an effort at the statehouse aims to mandate all-gender bathrooms in public buildings.
  • A snowstorm over the weekend closed schools Monday in the Cortez, Dolores and Dove Creek school districts, according to The Journal. And the Colorado General Assembly passed a resolution honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • The Colorado Avalanche Information Center issued avalanche warnings for much of Colorado on Sunday. And an avalanche near Breckenridge Ski Resort resulted in the death of a skier on Saturday.

  • Wind gusts between 80 and 100 miles per hour ripped through Colorado’s Front Range last week. By late afternoon, some sixty thousand people were without electricity. In the Four Corners region, high winds knocked out power to thousands more. Winter Storm Bankston started in California, dumping snow in the Sierras and Utah. Much-needed precipitation arrived in Colorado, but the wind wreaked havoc. For more on the science behind what fueled the storm, KGNU's Shannon Young spoke with Andrew Winters, Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder.
  • A powerful winter storm brought snow and wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour to the Four Corners region Tuesday night, causing widespread power outages, and in Shiprock, schools in the Central Consolidated School District were closed Wednesday; The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has sent a progress report to the state legislature on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
