Examining Prop KK: Local Advocate Gina Lopez Shares Insights on the Firearm Tax Measure

As early voting begins, Colorado Proposition KK is drawing attention. The measure proposes a tax on firearm and ammunition sales, with revenue funding mental health initiatives and services for crime victims. KSJD's LP McKay sat down with Gina Lopez, a Ute Mountain Ute Tribal member and advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, to get her unique perspective. Lopez, who works in victim services, emphasized the potential benefits for those in her community. Meanwhile, opponents argue the tax places an unfair burden on gun owners.

LP recently moved to Mancos from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
