Carute Roma is a 4 Corners band, pulling from Eastern European and Roma influences, to create danceable tunes.

Cortez’s Sunflower Theatre will come alive on Saturday, November 16, with the unique, genre-blending sounds of Carute Roma, who celebrate two decades of music-making. Known for infusing Eastern European folk, Latin rhythms, and even touches of punk, the band promises an anniversary show that reflects their musical journey and highlights their evolution over the years.

Carute Roma started with just a few members inspired by the folk sounds of Eastern Europe. Guitarist Brian Arens and violinist Michael Rendon, founding members, returned from travels in Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary, drawn to the traditional music they encountered. Together, with other early members, they began performing the songs they’d learned abroad.

The band’s lineup has shifted over time, introducing new influences and styles. Some members, like the trumpet player, Nicole Mosher, have been with the band for nearly their entire run. Each addition brought fresh ideas and sounds, expanding their music’s range. As Nicole explains, “It’s a really varied sound… and extremely danceable. Our music appeals to all age ranges, from toddlers to grandparents.”

Many of Carute Roma’s songs embrace the minor key, often associated with darker tones, but the energy of their performances keeps it lively and danceable. "That juxtaposition,” bassist Jon Broholm shared, “really catches people's ear and gets them dancing.” The band’s repertoire includes both traditional folk and original compositions, often developed collaboratively. Brian might bring a rhythm or melody, and the group builds upon it, layering lyrics, harmonies, and instrumentals until a new song takes shape. Other members include Mark Walser on violin, Robert Aspen on accordion, and Dave Sachs on drums. Lisa Sumi won't be playing with the band on Saturday, but she played accordion as well for several years.

With a combination of traditional tunes and original songs, Carute Roma’s performances are true celebrations of global sound. The Sunflower Theatre event promises to be both a high-energy performance and a chance to experience the group’s unique journey firsthand. As they put it, “Come get down with us. Let’s dance!”

LP recently moved to Mancos from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
