In Cortez, car lovers are gearing up for a weekend of nostalgia, horsepower, and community connection. The Over the Hill Gang Cortez Car Club is hosting its annual Collector Car Appreciation Day celebration on Saturday, July 12, with events designed to celebrate the culture, economic impact, and lasting appeal of classic and performance vehicles.
Bert Valencia, a longtime car enthusiast and event organizer, joined KSJD’s Lacy McKay to preview the festivities and reflect on the enduring role of car culture in the Four Corners region.
“It’s an American tradition,” Valencia said. “Whether it’s the classic cruisers of the past or today’s high-tech performance cars, folks have always found ways to connect through their love of vehicles.”
The day kicks off with the Seven Draw Cruise, a scenic drive that loops through Cortez, Mancos, and Dolores before returning to town. Registration opens at 12:30 p.m. at the Cortez High School, with the first cars heading out at 2 p.m.
Later that evening, KSJD will broadcast a live “cruise night” program from Main Street, featuring classic tunes, live commentary, and special guests. The Sunflower Theatre will also be open for those looking to gather, dance, or simply soak in the atmosphere.
Valencia emphasized the economic importance of the automotive industry, sharing data from the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) that highlights millions in annual revenue and thousands of jobs tied to car-related businesses in Colorado.
“It’s more than a hobby,” Valencia said. “These events bring people together, support local businesses, and keep a deep tradition alive.”
Listeners can tune in to KSJD from 6 to 10 p.m. on July 12 to catch the live broadcast, or head downtown to join the celebration in person.
