A new community event at the Sunflower Theatre aims to spark conversation about public service—both at the national level and here in the Four Corners.
The event, titled “Who Is Government,” is inspired by Michael Lewis’s book highlighting the work of federal employees across a range of agencies. Local organizers say the goal is to bring those ideas closer to home by connecting them with the experiences of public servants in the region.
Karen Sheek with the League of Women Voters of Montezuma County says the event has been in the works for several years, driven in part by a desire to highlight the value of public service.
“I really would love for people to leave this program…with a greater appreciation for public servants and for the role government does,” she said.
The evening will feature a panel of local and regional speakers, including Mesa Verde National Park Superintendent Casey Cook Collins, former wildland firefighter Alan Farnsworth, retired Forest Service employee David Neely, and Montezuma County veterans services officer Travis Parker.
Organizers say the discussion will blend elements of a book club and a panel, with opportunities for audience participation and questions.
Chuck Greaves, who will emcee the event, says the goal is to highlight “unsung heroes” across all levels of government—people whose work often goes unnoticed but has a direct impact on daily life.
The event is open to a broad audience, but organizers say they especially hope to reach younger people and those who may feel skeptical about government institutions.
“This is not a political statement,” Sheek said. “It’s an opportunity for people to learn a little bit more about what some of these folks do.”
“Who Is Government” takes place May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Sunflower Theatre in Cortez. Admission is free, and attendees do not need to have read the book to participate.
