Suspicious Package at Monticello Forest Service Office Filled with Snakes and Frogs

Canyonlands Natural History Association

The Manti-La Sal National Forest Ranger Station in Moab received what might have been a threatening package earlier this month, but it turned out to be filled with non-poisonous reptiles and amphibians.

A newsletter from the Canyonlands Natural History Association reports employees at the station heard strange noises coming from a package mailed from Georgia. When they opened it, they found plastic tubs containing garter snakes and canyon tree frogs. A note from a concerned grandfather said that his grandson had captured the reptiles without him knowing, and that he felt they should return home. Forest Service staff said they were glad the animals made it back, but also discouraged people from sending live animals in the mail.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
