Finding "Sources of Strength" at Montezuma Cortez High School

Healthy activities, mental health, medical access, spirituality, generosity, mentors, positive friends, and family support. For Montezuma-Cortez High School students, those are eight possible sources of strength.

A program with that name has been in place three years at the high school, offered in partnership with the Piñon Project. According to its website, Sources of Strength uses “the power of peer-led social networks to positively change norms and cultures.”

KSJD's Austin Cope visited MCHS sophomore counselor Carmen Maness and freshman counselor Mark White to find out more about how they approach student mental health issues on campus-- both with the Sources of Strength Program and beyond it. Mrs. Maness explained that one feature of the program allows students to pass concerns about their peers' well-being to the counselors.
