Two new sets of stop signs installed this week along Montezuma Avenue in Cortez are intended to calm traffic and increase safety at the intersections, according to Cortez Public Works Director Phil Johnson. He says his department placed stop signs at the intersections of Harrison and Market Streets after discussions with area residents about traffic volume, speed, and pedestrian safety. The Colorado Department of Transportation also mentioned high traffic volume along Montezuma in a study this year, and Cortez Police Chief Roy Lane supported the decision to add stop signs. The department also plans to add crosswalks at the intersections next year. The Public Works Department has the authority to install traffic-control devices at any location it deems necessary, but Johnson says he notified the Cortez City Council and City Manager before placing the signs along Montezuma. He encourages people to contact his office with questions or concerns.
