Recently released documents by the Department of the Interior show a conversation neglecting the benefits of national monument preservation. They were retracted a day later and republished with redactions, but not before the Washington Post had a look and published a story.

Juliet Eilperin, the Post’s senior national affairs correspondent, detailed the contents in an article Monday. Among the thousands of pages of emails, Eilperin wrote, Secretary Ryan Zinke and department personnel rejected evidence supporting monument protections and “sought out evidence that could buttress the case for unraveling them."

Eilperin joined KSJD’s Daniel Rayzel to explain the retraction, how it affects transparency in the department, and what the Post plans to do with the unredacted documents.
