Plateau Fire Grows to 5,750 Acres

San Juan National Forest

The Plateau Fire north of McPhee Reservoir has grown to 5,750 acres with 15 percent containment, prompting increased closures for the area.

The fire was spotted on July 22 at a size of approximately 5 acres and quickly expanded after growing out of Plateau canyon under dry, hot weather with high winds contributing to activity. Firefighters are focused on burnouts near roads to establish strong containment lines during periods of favorable conditions.

Road closures increased to include the Dolores/Norwood road on the eastern boundary and House Creek road as the southern boundary, but access to the shore of McPhee Reservoir remains unaffected. An updated closure list can be viewed here.

The nearby West Guard Fire has kept to 1,412 acres as it reached 90 percent containment. A release reports minimal activity as personnel continue patrols of the area.

Both fires are believed to be lightning-caused.

Update (August 7, 9:47 a.m.): This article was updated to reflect new numbers provided by San Juan National Forest.
