Capturing a Community: Inside Four Corners Voices

Ways To Subscribe
Four Corners Voices brings together poetry, essays, and stories from local writers.

The Four Corners region is rich in storytelling, and the new anthology Four Corners Voices: Stories, Poetry, Essays captures the creativity of its writers. Featuring poetry, fiction, and real-life reflections, the collection brings together diverse voices, from first-time writers to seasoned authors.

In this audio piece, we talk with Lisa C. Taylor, a poet and judge for the anthology, and contributor Gus Hallin, a retired doctor whose piece reflects on his experience during the pandemic.

Key Highlights from the Conversation:

  • Building a Writing Community – Lisa shares how the Four Corners Writers Group and the Mesa Verde Writers Conference nurtured local talent.
  • Why These Stories Matter – The anthology brings a mix of poetry, fiction, and deeply personal essays, offering readers an intimate look into the region’s creative voices.
  • Gus Hallin’s Journey to Writing – A doctor-turned-writer, Gus explains how his work in an ICU during COVID-19 inspired his story.
  • Judging the Anthology – Lisa discusses what she looked for in submissions and how emotion played a key role in the selection process.

LP recently moved to Mancos from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
