Bear Activity on the Rise: Tips to Protect Your Property and Wildlife

Ways To Subscribe

Good morning!

I’m Lacy McKay.

Here’s your daily dose of the KSJD outdoor report…

As temperatures rise and natural food sources remain scarce, bears in the Four Corners region are becoming more active — and more curious. Wildlife officials have received a growing number of reports about bears attempting to raid trash cans and livestock enclosures. Now’s the time to bearproof your property.

Start by securing your garbage — keep it indoors until pickup day or use a bear-resistant container. Don’t leave pet food or bird seed outside overnight, and clean grills thoroughly after use. For those with chickens or other small livestock, use electric fencing when possible and secure enclosures with strong latches.

Bears are smart and persistent, but they’re also naturally wary of humans — removing easy meals is one of the best ways to keep them wild and safe. You can learn more about coexistence and best practices at cpw.state.co.us.

That’s the KSJD Outdoor Report for today.

Stay safe out there.
