What to See in the December Night Sky: Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, and the Geminid Meteor Shower

Ways To Subscribe

December offers excellent night-sky viewing across the Four Corners, with Saturn shining high in the early evenings and Neptune nearby for those with binoculars. Jupiter rises later and dominates overnight, bright enough to reveal its cloud bands and four largest moons through a telescope. Before sunrise, Mercury makes its best Northern Hemisphere appearance of the year. The Geminid meteor shower also peaks mid-month, delivering dozens of meteors per hour under dark skies. With crisp air and long nights, it’s an ideal month for stargazing.

LP recently moved to the Four Corners from Austin, Texas, where they worked as a Case Manager for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and in HOA property management where they were fortunate to learn many different styles of communication and creative thinking/problem solving. In their time away from work, they watch a ton of movies (spanning all decades, nationalities, and genres), and tries to listen to one really good album every day.
